BarryKeymasterTodd, I am going to use your audio example and photo to create an “alternate” short and sweet video demo for the Vibe circuit.
I will include links to your site.
Sometimes people like to hear demos other than from me but I usually do not have that luxury.
That said, I may be the only PCB guy that even bothers to do demos.
BarryKeymasterThat Playboy show really gives good clear insight into that tone.
and this… in case anyone else is wonder wtf we are all going on about?
Why can’t we get these aging musicians to understand the potential keys to their tone which was ultimately the keys to their success. Grand Funk is not the only example but it is quite audible.
I realize as they get older they want more refined gear and more refined tones. Along the way they sometimes lose something. I can name a dozen bands easily that fits.
Maybe I should create a Mark Farner NostalgiTone, though I’m not sure how much it would be appreciated.
BarryKeymasterThe audio file is very helpful.
That is absolutely not normal at all, does not sound like a JFET issue, or even a circuit issue, except for the possibility of something clipping.
The first thing I would make sure of is that I use only (2) 100% known good cables, the Sunn-T, (1) known good power supply, Guitar, Amp, and absolutely nothing else in between. No multi power adapters. Just a single good 9v power supply hooked up to a single pedal.
Make sure that your red power wire is nowhere near your circuit board, particularly the JFETs.
Since this is a multi stage JFET circuit it could easily be taking line noise and amplifying it multiple times to be audible.
If after doing all of that and nothing improves I would look into the possibility of something clipping. Then you can try switching out the JFETs to another type and re-bias.
Another thought could be to check your In and Out jacks as well as making sure the off-board wiring is solid. A re-flow may be in order for everything. In that case be patient. It only takes about 5 minutes to touch and reheat the solder joints over the entire project. Take care in that you do not burn any components or wires.
BarryKeymasterCongrats. At least it got you looking.
Now all you have left to do is a proper “Show Off Your Build“ thread.
Post a couple nice photos for me.
BarryKeymasterI am sorry that I do not have anything to add to this other than I can certainly appreciate the early Mark Farner tone.
BarryKeymasterWhat kind of stuff do you finger pick.
BarryKeymasterTell me more about some of the kind of styles, songs you like playing with this one.
BarryKeymasterThe next two things I want you to check.
Turn the Intensity control down, full counter clockwise. Adjust the speed control and see if the LED pulses.
Check the color bands on your R24 resistor and make sure it is 100R, and not 100K.
BarryKeymasterHello. First, I wanted to let you know that I already responded to your question when you posted on the other person’s thread. While I prefer you to have your own thread, I wanted to ensure that you knew I responded to your question within 2 hours, exactly 6 days ago.
Before we continue, let me emphasize that I have been running a successful site for 14 years, and there is no advantage to releasing products that do not work. Additionally, please note that this is a support forum, so 95% of the time, people only post their issues rather than their success stories. Since this is a new release, there has only been one other post, which involved a builder-related issue where he soldered to the wrong side of his wiring board.
So lets have a look.
Did you use a non-conductive PCB spacer (per the instructions, top of page 3) between the metal circles of the Dual Gang pot and the PCB solder side containing 1n5817? This can be a small square of cardboard, plastic, electrical tape, etc.

If that doesn’t resolve your issue, we’ll keep working on it.
If it does, please let us know.
BarryKeymasterI would also like to know if you are hearing something different in your build than what you heard in my posted video.
I checked all of the resistor values which are fine.
I am assuming that the yellow capacitors are all ceramic, and none of them are tantalum.
Since I cannot verify capacitor values I would double check all of them as they are important to remove high end noise.
Also I notice the power wire laying directly on a JFET which could cause amplified electrical noise. Route it away from anything in the audio path. I would also suggest to make sure all JFETs are firmly seated in the sockets.
You could also try a different JFET such as J113 which would be the same orientation. You would have to re-bias.
BarryKeymasterThe term “fizzy” is too subjective and used in various contexts, making it difficult for me to provide a useful suggestion based solely on that.
I have a very clear video of me playing the circuit to help you decide.
If you are not getting a similar sound then either post a video showing off your specific issue or provide clear photos showing the color bands of all resistors.
Also please note any substitutions.
BarryKeymasterWell done SteveO and thank you for posting.
I am glad you enjoy it!
BarryKeymaster@Todd
First since I cannot see. Did you use a non-conductive PCB spacer per the instructions between the metal circles of the Dual Gang pot and the PCB solder side containing 1n5817?

If that is not it I might suspect your TL074. It is easy enough to replace with a known working chip since it is socketed. The LED needs to be pulsing all the time, so that is easy enough to check as well.
Other things to try if that doesn’t work.
- Re-flow all of your solder joints on the back of the PCB.
- Take voltages and report for TL074, TL072, Q1, and Q2
BarryKeymaster“I was going to order the enclosure but wasn’t sure if the file was okay. when I open it it doesn’t look anything like the finished product.”
That is the way it should look.
As you can see from my image below I was able to pull the mask back. I just had trouble trying to edit beyond that.

I can’t say with 100% certainty that it will be correct, as I haven’t used it. According to Matthew, it should work fine if you use my drill template since they are both oriented correctly. Still, I cannot guarantee anything. I can tell you that the blue you are seeing is the gloss layer which is covering the color layer.
BarryKeymasterThanks!
I think, in addition to a guide, I’d like to create a special thread for ART donations.
This would be helpful since many people are not familiar with how to use ART programs, and it would be nice to have some diverse options.
The thread wouldn’t be limited to 1590DD. It could cover any type of Triple combo, Dual combo, or Single.
BarryKeymasterWell done, and glad you like it.
Thanks for sharing.
