Well that sure looks prettier than mine I think. I love having it all in one enclosure as I use al three of the circuits in tandem with each other to suit my mood and styles.

    Very nice job!

There are areas of concern on the board. The ones I point to in the image below may not all be bad because I cannot see them all clearly but I would inspect all of them. That said I would redo any areas the look like there are not properly soldered or perhaps hanging on by a thread. You can do this by reflowing and in the case of wires you may need to restrip and make a firm mechanical connection before applying the solder.

Check all of the stuff in red and blue.

That is an excellent build and I appreciate the extra effort to describe what you did. I love the concentric pots so you are taking up a lot less room but can do most everything a KOT can do. Stunning visually.

I am working on something but I do not have an immediate solution.

I am going assume you have tried Small Bear?

I know Bruce has them at PedalPartsandKits.com but he only has them available for his kits.

Can you post some clear updated photos of the whole build as well as just the board.

I’m quite near, this direct wiring worked but when putting it all together in the enclosure it starts failing again. I still need to check it all again.

This is an excellent learning experience as well. In regards to the “wire dressing”.

I would suggest that there is more wire than needed. When you try to fit everything in the enclosure there may be stress involved causing an issue. Check out our Combo Build guide on the Guides Page for some excellent ideas. Perhaps reflow all on and off board wiring.

That is an appropriate fix and glad you got it working. On a side note we avoid tantalum capacitors in all builds. If you would have reversed the orientation and applied power there could have been much more troubleshooting.

    Hi Robert,

Yes sorry we missed this. I have been tweaking the forum for weeks now trying to get it setup just right as well as keeping  spammers at bay.

Anyway I always was a fan of the Mark tone so I find this interesting. I also share Wilkies concern however my guess is that the circuit is producing a starved fuzz tone similar to what Marks early Red Album sound is. So I think mayeb having a 9 volt circuit with a Voltage Sag added to it might be very worth investigating. Best of both world scenario.

Can you post an audio clip of what you currently have?

I wanted to let you know I copy and pasted your build pictured above over in the prize thread for you so that you could add it to your accumulated price value. I eventually plan on individually moving all of the prize submissions over to the actual show off your build thread as well.  Very nice build by the way and I am hoping you enjoy it.

You could upload a new photo so we can have a look at the final try to see if it is something obvious via pictures. It wouldn’t hurt as I see it anyway.

Mark it is a buffer board I believe and that should be examined as well.

There are some voltage discrepancies. Not sure why the voltage is low on pin 11 (v+) of LM13700

Be sure the Germanium Diode did not get even the slightest crack or chip while installing.

    They are incredibly flimsy.

There are 2 similar types of voltage regulator that I believe have different pinout. Check the datasheets on the one you have to be sure it is identical to the one called for in the build docs.

We will need voltages of all three IC’s and the transistors.

Proper Q voltages for comparison (all pots full CCW)

    Q1: (7.27 – 3.71 – 3.23 – DSG) <- Drain Source Gate not CBE

    Q2: (5.05 – 3.75 – 2.90 – CBE)

    Q3: (5.05 – 2.90 – 2.86 – CBE)

I would also re-flow the project, test for continuity (see Crash Course Guide p.9) and use an audio probe (see guide on the Guides Page.

I cannot see from the photo but make sure your SWAH has the In and Out Tip wires crossed and led to the appropriate side of the Buffer Board. This build version for whatever reason got published with the In / Out pads on the opposite sides from what is expected symmetrically. It is discussed in the Build Doc and you can see how the wires are routed.

    I hope this image helps:

What Billy and Mark said plus here is this also from our Guides Page.

I would print these out and hang them where you work.
