PlaysforfunModeratorThanks guys for the added detail. Wilkie, I was looking for that link to Tonmann’s post but couldn’t find it. Thanks.
PlaysforfunModeratorGreetings HlyGhstRydr55. There is a ton of information out there and probably much experimentation in the future. In the mean time know that it is about ‘forward voltage’ of each type of diode. In this case you are looking to even out the difference in volume between pairs when switched. Stacking the diodes is a simple way to achieve this. As far as the control setup not being identical, not sure. Triple check yourself and use a DMM for sure for that. The general consensus is that 4 GE diodes (2 in series opposing 2 in series) is pretty close to an opposing pair of Si diodes. Conclusion for today is to add two Ge diodes. Let us know what happens. Cheers

PlaysforfunModeratorIt is a masterpiece from a master. That’s for sure. I’m glad when anything I do is an inspiration to anyone here. After all, my inspiration came from members past and present, on this site. And after a long hiatus I’m going to jump back in this great hobby. I hope to inspire some more real soon. First I’ll have to take a gander at all the new boards you guys have been busy with. Members have been putting out some real fine work. Props for all the site and build documents upgrades, btw. It’s looking great.

PlaysforfunModeratorMagnificent execution. The 9v pass through is a great idea!
PlaysforfunModeratorHere is the original posting link for the presentation of the Wayward Son. I had to read it myself to remember the particulars. It’s been a moment since its conception. Here’s how it probably went.
So I put the Wayward Son together early on, during my fun with diodes phase. It’s geared toward a chorus loving guitarist who likes a few (many) flavors of overdrive/distortion and doesn’t want to bring the whole board to a small gig. Later on I found out that was pretty much the theme of most of my builds. Anyway, it’s comprised of the Dr. Rock board, a couple of DPDT switch boards, the Stage 357 Magnum, and the Mini Me. Because everybody, everywhere, should have at least one Mini Me. I had the boards populated and sitting because I love to solder, but the idea lacked any spirit at first. I couldn’t decide how to bring it together. So, I figured I’d give a listen to the Dr. Rock demo video that Barry did and see if that could help to show me the way to the other side. Boy. Did it. As a wayward son myself I could start to understand the way. Follow me. Don’t let go. I’ll take you through it. Ready? So we enter, as usual, from the right hand side and immediately find to our bewilderment, that all circuits are powered up and ready via a single 9v jack, yet all bypassable with the aid of 3PDT boards too. Like a ditch door halfway through the roller coaster line for scaredy-cats and moms. Comforting and nice of me, but we are taking the long way. We get stomped straight into the Noise And Confusion section, provided by our Dr. Rock where we choose our initial gain and level. Now the Dr. Rock board has A B and C G pads, you see, in case you want to jump off the board for some clipping fun. A and B from the soft overdrive area of the circuit or C and G from the hard driving area of the opposing diodes shunting to ground. So naturally, I chose both. I put some diode choices on DPDT boards with on-off-on switches and designed a rotary switch to swap the boards between the two sections as desired. Confused? Don’t worry just put the switches in the off mode for now and you’ll just have some natural op amp clipping as we sail into the Soaring Ever Higher section provided by the magical, then named, Stage 357 Magnum board. BTW it’s the XX Double Shot now. Scoop em up. So small but so powerful. Be careful here. We could bypass but ‘come on man’. Lets go. The first half of the board is the infamous Stage 3 circuit as we know and love it. A single transistor, adjustable, boost for a Glimpse Beyond. The Ever Higher switch looks like something I need to touch. I flick it. Whoa, good thing the Too High knob is there. It controls the level of the second half of 357 which is another single transistor boost. You could go too high I think. Oh yeah, to help our baritone buddies just move the Carry On switch to the other side and allow all bass frequencies as we soar. We aren’t out yet. Did I mention that I like chorus? We head into the Voices When I’m Dreaming section, provided by the, popular for a reason, Mini Me board. A couple of knobs, that point this way and that, control your dream somewhat. It can get really out there in there. We see the Winds of Fortune knob and just know that it will guide us back. But this just proves that you are dreaming because that is the tone knob of the Dr. Rock board with sets the incoming tone. I just felt like putting it over there. Either way satisfaction is guaranteed. Well, that’s it, I don’t know if we ever come down. I gifted it to Barry’s daughter, Paige. You’ll have to ask her. Hi Paige! She did at least one video where this pedal is featured. I felt proud.
Inspiration from a demo vid? You tell me.
I’m fortunate enough to have Adobe Illustrator to use as the tool for designing my pedals. I use it from when I dream it up to designing and printing the final waterslide label. The free app Inkscape can do much of the same if you are interested. It’s the dreaming it up part, to at least a starting point, that seems to take forever sometimes. Just keep trying. But check in with Barry.
PlaysforfunModeratorHere’s a good one.

This one’s cool.

More whimsy

PlaysforfunModeratorAlright I’ll throw in. I’m going to guess $30K. If I’m clairvoyant then it’s 30K.
PlaysforfunModeratorHey Dan. In addition to ‘The Great One”s good news I’ve got a little too. I found as I built, especially combo pedals which I love, there are ground pads all over these boards. Many are available for exactly what you are wishing for. And the more you cram in there the more sharing of ground points there can be. One example for the paramix could be that when you are boxing you discover that to ground both P1 and P3, you can jump between the two pots and then to a single pad on the board. You just freed up the pad 1 of the ‘jumped’ pot. It happens when you don’t use the LED pads for an LED also. They are all over the place and you will find them more and more as you build. And if you use the 3PDT boards, well, now you have close to a zillion ground pads available. Have fun.
PlaysforfunModeratorHello Alistair. Up front I will tell you that I don’t understand the circuit completely. But focusing on the led choice color, it seems from what I read that purple just doesn’t have the ‘luminous intensity’ of some other color choices. I think you chose a dim color as far as led’s go. If purple has got to be the one then I would suggest a white led with purple dome. Hopefully for complete understanding, someone smarter than I will pop in below with the science behind it all. I only chose purple for a build once and had the same problem but because I wanted only purple I settled for dim. It worked out for me with a happy customer though.
PlaysforfunModeratorGood morning George and welcome. It would be cool if Barry offered a tuner that we could build ourselves but this circuit merely allows you to use YOUR tuner silently when the mute switch in engaged. If you look at page 4 of the guide you will see that a jack is wired to the tuner pads on the board. That jack would be the connection to your tuner via one of your cables. But because the circuit splits the signal, the portion that goes to the tuner will not continue on to the amp. And the rest of the signal that will continue on to the amp passes through the excellent buffer which makes up the rest of the circuit. So Barry is providing a way to use Your tuner without it affecting the tone you’ve created.
PlaysforfunModeratorWelcome Andrew. You’ve come to the right hobby. It can be as complicated as you want it to be but doesn’t have to be. Where help is always available because we have all learned from the same mistakes. And is always better than being at work. You are only limited here by your own imagination which we are going to help you expand. You’ll learn some electronics along the way. And if you can think it up then Billy, Wilkie1 and Cybercow can help figure out how to make it work. All that being said, I am never limited with my LED placement. Of course, you should always have forethought as to how things should turn out in the end, but I put the LED wherever I want it to be. Sometimes it’s position will fit perfectly with some art you picked out for the top, for example. Or maybe you feel like it should be to the left of the footswitch this time, or between the pots. Whatever you can dream up can probably be wired to work. So no fear. Just get some of Barry’s hook up wire and a decent soldering iron and warm that sucker up. Every time you’ll be smarter than the last and yes it will cost you a few mistakes along the way. I have a few builds with guitar picks covering wrongly placed holes. Looks great.
PlaysforfunModeratorHey Big. Well that is the life long question isn’t it? To set and forget or fiddle with it. Sometimes you need a simplistic approach, other times you want every mod even if they stick out sideways. I’m usually the guy seeking loads of mods but not always. In this case I opt for a deep enough box to use the stereo pot. In the case for a shallow box, sticking to a single pot works great using the trimmer for gain 2. Even if you set and forget you can still remember that you can re-set and forget again any time. So all tones can remain an option even if you use the trimmer. Clear as mud right?
PlaysforfunModeratorLove that Mosfet/germanium clipping. Nice job with the resurrection. ‘Lost count with the steps’ yup, happens to me too.
PlaysforfunModeratorVery cool indeed. I’m going to have to digest that a few more times.
PlaysforfunModeratorI always knew there was a Master in our midst but this is way beyond mastery. My thesaurus lets me down at the moment. This needs to be celebrated brother! I bow and I bow again. there it is …Amazeballs
Congratulations!
PlaysforfunModeratorImprovisation is the birth of excellence. What mistakes? Nice work.
PlaysforfunModeratorGlad to help, eliobou. This chorus circuit is excellent. I keep one nearby always.
