    Hi,

I completed my first board, the Super Sonic v2. When I turn either the volume or drive knob up, you can faintly hear the fuzzy distortion. But when you turn either up to the max, it makes a loud and unpleasant squealing noise. I’m wondering if maybe my resistors or potentiometers are wrong or bad.

Any help in troubleshooting this will be appreciated.

I cannot trace wiring from the photo.

That said the first troubleshooting item might be to re-flow all of your on-board and off-board solder joints. 70% of the time a bad solder joint is the issue. Just hold your iron tip on each joint to reheat and re-flow the solder while keeping some extra solder handy in case it is needed. Make sure any bare back pots are shielded against the back of the board. Triple check your wiring.

    Sorry for the late reply.

Come to think of it, I actually just thought of the shielding problem with the pots today. I noticed on a new build that I’m working on that the back of the pots came with a plastic covering. I remembered that the pots that I used on this build didn’t have that back covering.

How can I solve this issue? Do I put any old plastic sheet in between the PCB and the pots somehow, or do I have to desolder them (which would be a pain) and get ones with a plastic covering?

    Thanks for your help Barry.

You can shield them with whatever you have available.

You could glue some guitar picks to the back of them if you want.

Everything works now! Turns out that I also had a few wires revered on the input and output jacks as well. I overlooked the S-sleeve and T-tip on the drawings and got them mixed up.

    Thanks again for your help!
