I was going to throw this together today.  The build doc calls for a 1n4739.  My local electronics store has 4738 and 4740.  Would either work?  Also, some schooling on what all this means would be cool.  The guy I am making it for wants to put it in a guitar with 1 knob.  I assume I could us a 10k trim for the volume so he can set it and forget it?

Jon – the 1N4739 is a 9.1v Zener diode. I’d hold out for the correct part number. That 9.1v is kinda important. You could use the 1N4738 (8.2v zener diode) but will clamp sooner than the 1N4739 and it may not perform as well as the intended 9.1v zener. The 1N4740 is a 10v zener.

And yes, the volume pot can be replaced with a 10K trimpot with no issues – other than no easy access to the pedal’s volume setting.
