ParticipantFinished a couple pedals over the weekend. First one up wasn’t really planned until I found an unused GBOF board in my stash and checked the latest version of the build documents. Got all excited about the NPN Fuzz Face with external bias. Initially it didn’t work as planned until I found a pair of OC140’s that have just enough Hfe spread to do the fuzz thing with my Strat volume all the way up. Box is a light blue metallic sparkle planned for another project that didn’t work out.
Pedal #2, completed today is an EMEXAR coupled with one of the old Roto Tone boards. Main board is built to MXR Distortion + specs except that I had a note to use a B1M in place of the C500K for the Gain – not sure where that came from but I like it. The Roto Tone provides four clipping options that currently are 1N34A and 3mm red LED, 3 1N4148s, a pair of 2N7000s, and a 5mm red and 5mm blue LEDs (interesting combo I found a British guy raving about – “amp like tones”). I got lucky and somehow the volume is consistent in all four positions. Box is a pink metallic sparkle from Love My Switches latest release.
Having issues with my phone and laptop saving my photos in a.heic format so they won’t post. If anybody has a tip on how to fix that I’d be grateful.

KeymasterI don’t know anything about that format but when I use Google I get this:
You can convert .HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format) photos to JPG, PNG, or other formats using several methods:
1. Convert on Windows (Without Extra Software)
- Right-click the HEIC file and select Open with > Photos.
- Click the three-dot menu (•••) > Save As.
- Choose JPG or PNG as the format.
If this doesn’t work, you may need to install the free “HEIF Image Extensions” from the Microsoft Store.
2. Convert on Mac
- Open the HEIC file in Preview.
- Click File > Export.
- Choose JPEG or PNG, then save.
3. Online HEIC to JPG Converters (No Installation Required)
Use a free online tool like:
Simply upload the HEIC file, convert, and download the JPG.

ParticipantOn iPhones and iPads, go to: Settings -> Camera -> Formats -> Most compatible
Apple defaults to HEIC format, which is great for dealing with members of the Apple community, but terrible for everyone else (Windows, Android, Chromebooks, Linux, etc.).
GIMP is a free image processing tool (similar to Photoshop) for multiple platforms; you can load HEIC images and “export” to JPG or PNG.

ParticipantGot some wind and power issues in Texas today, but I think we’re good for now. Here are photos of the GBOF NPN Fuzz Face with external bias.

And the guts:
Thanks for looking.

ModeratorNice job. Just a hint for easier and cleaner wiring: ground is ground and can be found all over the schematics and boards usually. For example you could have run a ground wire from DC jack to each audio jack. Then a single ground wire to the FF from one jack. Then a single ground wire from the FF to the 3PDT board. Much less complicated. Another thing I do for easy and neat is to jumper my pot lugs together on the pot when the schematic calls for it. A variable resistor, like the Bias knob for the FF, will usually have lug 3 or lug 1 connected to lug 2. That doesn’t need a wire all the way to the board to achieve. A scrap piece of resistor leg between lugs is all thats necessary. 2 wires to the board and a jumper between lugs instead of three wires to the board. Easier and neater. Less chance of cross-talk as a bonus.

ModeratorNice build. Reminds me to unearth my own GBOF board and investigate the various options for mayhem available.

ParticipantThe GBOF board provides lots of fun! I have built several pedals with it alone or in combination with other boards. I have built several versions of the Hornby Skewes treble booster (both Si and Ge versions), Rangemasters, Fuzz Face variants and Electra/Trotsky drives. I love this simple, yet versatile board, and actually is the reason I discovered Guitar PCB and Barry years ago as GPCB was mentioned on the BYOC forum.
