    Classic Tone Bender-inspired fuzz with a Modern approach.

    ModBender takes the legendary three-transistor fuzz architecture that defined some of rock’s most iconic tones and refines it for today’s builders. Using three 2N3903 silicon transistors selected for their lower gain characteristics, ModBender delivers the aggressive harmonic character, sustain, and dynamic response associated with classic Tone Bender circuits while providing improved consistency and reliability.

    Unlike traditional tone controls that shape a broad range of frequencies, ModBender features a dedicated high-frequency contour control that allows players to fine-tune the upper harmonic response of the fuzz, allowing players to adjust the balance between cutting definition and a more subdued vintage character.

    The onboard bias trim allows builders to fine-tune the final gain stage for the desired balance of sustain, compression, and vintage-style fuzz response. Start at 4.5V on the Q3 collector and adjust from there by ear to find your preferred tonal character.

    Barry, what hfe range were you aiming towards with the 2n3903?
    Looking forward to this one and the Citrus amp boards, bet they are going to make a great 2 in 1 build.

    anything from 130 to 160 should be fine. 135 is what I would shoot for but no need to cork sniff it.

    It’s nearly impossible to get that low with 2N3904 so that is why the suggested 2N3903. Otherwise they are identical.

    As usual from GPCB, a very nicely designed circuit.  Basically a Si transistor MkII Tonebender, but with a “tone” control (the latter a feature of the MkIII tonebender).  If I hadn’t already built two Si MkII Tonebenders (the Sriracha fuzz being one) I would jump on this one.  The only mod I’d do if building this is make the trimpot an external control to adjust the “character” of the pedal.
