MattParticipantYup- the 2KJ on the volume would be a much more economical and faster solution. But after making my MegaRat I’m now hooked on boosting Rats. This sounds so good when it’s goosed!! Decisions to be made.
MattParticipantStellar work! Do you love it? I’m a huge fan of the MKC, and I have used the S3 a few times. Both incredibly versatile boards. This is a terrific looking build. What are the diodes in the MKC D1/D2?
MattParticipantI love the new search function and I use it alllll the time. And I think you did a great job redesigning here Barry! Unfortunately just before the swap (and my move) I think I stocked up on a lot of things so I’m plodding my way through projects. And except for a few minor issues they’re all working nicely. But as a result I’m not starting as many tech support discussions and haven’t placed an order in a while. Pretty soon I’ll be working on boxing up a whole bunch of projects and I look forward to sharing those here. That was always my favorite part! Besides, then I get to restock.
MattParticipantI’m guilty of lurking. But I am back up and running. I finished my Hot Chilicon build tonight and tested it positively. So I have I think five full circuits that need to be boxed and one that is boxed but needs to be painted from February. So I haven’t posted any pictures in a LONG time. I’ll help lead the way shortly. You’re doing great!
MattParticipantYup- that’s about what I was thinking- thanks Barry. I built the MoRC a loooong time ago when I got it in the Gilmour bundle! I have the 3XC and its too meaty. (I have a second one that I’m reserving for a bass player friend.) I don’t have a BB so perhaps that will go on my next order. I’ll finish up this S3 I’ve had kicking around for a while and see how it does with the verb and maybe put the MKC in with it to see if perhaps another one needs to come home with me. I’ll have to look at my notes when I get home to see how I finished that particular build- I remember I didn’t put a switch in for the Ultra Drive, but I can’t remember if that’s because I just goosed it and left it there or if I decided I liked it a bit tamer… As always, thanks for your input. I’ll let you know when I have this one wrapped up. I currently have four and a half projects on a shelf in my new shop in a few stages of completion…
MattParticipantCopy that. Noted. My primary motivation here was that I built an AB a long time ago for a Plexi-Plus and couldn’t get either to work. I separated them out and eventually got the Plexi up and running and it’s great. So now I have an orphaned AB that I’d love to have operational so that I could test it with various circuits before I commit it to the build. I have never managed to get that first one rolling, despite changing Q1 and rebiasing and endless poking. I bought two at once and I’m about to populate the second one just to see if I cooked the switch way back when I was new. Incidentally the S3 may be a better solution for my Plexi project anyhow. I’m familiar with the circuit- it’s the post boost in my profile shot. I’ll look into that as well. Thank you.
MattParticipantAgreed! All of my modded DS1s have swapped status LEDs. I’ve also changed the knobs to match the LED so I kind of have a theme. Someday I’ll have to gather them up for a family photo. I haven’t cut one up in a loooong time- I just bought one of the new black ones NIB from a friend- come to think of it I didn’t think to open it up to make sure its not all SMD inside. Whoops. I’ll check that tonight. The plan was to make THIS one my ultimate DS1- the culmination of all my favorite mods and tweaks in one pedal.
MattParticipantIf it helps at all, my trick for demoing pedals is a looper pedal. Figure out a riff or progression and play it through the looper and then into the pedal. Now you have your hands free with your guitar playing coming through your rig and you can turn the gain up, delay settings, modulation- whatever.
MattParticipantStellar as always. I’d love to hear this as I have both of these boards in my stash right now. The Emerald is about due as I have a project I’d like to use it on- have you shot a demo yet? I’d love to hear this thing go. Love the color coordinated washers too. Nice touch.
MattParticipantBravo. Thank you for the rundown.
MattParticipantOh man do I love modding DS1s. I have a pile of them in my collection that I’ve done all sorts of unholy experiments on in search of the perfect metal tone. Forgive me, however, as it was a while ago and I’m rusty. My suggestion is you head over to electrosmash and look up the analysis of the DS1 and see what those caps do. The different types (electro vs box) won’t have much effect, but swapping out the crappy ones it came with for better quality caps will show improvement. Or so I’ve heard. Let me know how you make out and if you want to dig any deeper than just the ASE and Ultra mods. I’ve found it needs some tweaks to the EQ section to really come alive. All super easy stuff to do!
MattParticipantCheck please. I’m out.
What are the circuits used here- or at least an overview of the effects included? This is really something else!
MattParticipantI somehow missed this and I’m usually drawn to all things Rat! Beautifully done. I’d love to hear this one go. Fantastic layout and killer knobs too. Well played.
MattParticipantAwesome. Thanks Barry!
MattParticipantCheers Wilkie. At least I’m not crazy. I’m not starting tonight so I have a minute. This one will take some planning. I appreciate you looking.
MattParticipantBrilliantly done. This was the very first build I ever did and I still come back to it because it nails the tone of the solo in Time. I accidentally reversed my Input and Output jacks and still haven’t managed to go back in and fix them… Beautiful work as always. Looking forward to your future builds Mark.
MattParticipantHi Jed- what exactly are you looking to accomplish? To expand on what Barry said, the point of the 2KJ is to double the usefulness of one pot, if you will. For example on the MKC, you could put it on the gain and have two settings at the touch of a switch- perhaps a minimum gain and a maximum gain, for example. It might “feel” like an additional gain stage when you kick it up to max, but technically you’re still within the confines of the specs. The Afterblaster on the other hand, is an actual boost you can add on to the circuit.
Just more words. Good luck!
