Here’s a brief essay on modding a Phase 90 to add a depth control.

No offence intended, but the MBP Phase 90 has only a speed control and a colour switch. I wanted to see what effect one of Barry’s marvellous little Buff boards might have as an add-on depth control. I followed the build instructions but added a trimmer at R5 to have a finer degree of control over wet/dry balance. Glad I did, because this eventually helped in balancing the signals more precisely. The A100k pot in this case exhibited a spot where phase cancellations did seem to occur, signal level decreasing and other ‘out of phase’ symptoms. After googling pot tapers and other such esoteric stuff, I had a hunch that a C-taper pot might work better in this particular instance.

Long story short, it does seem to eliminate the hole in the middle of its log counterpart. So, here’s a modded Phase 90 (using Barry’s matched set of 2N5952s and the original 2N4125). Will box this up in due course, but heartily recommend the Buff ‘n’ Blend as a quick workaround for this particular aim. Naturally, YMMV. Thanks for reading.

Thanks @sofnwhat, appreciate your kind comments. I finished boxing said beast just now, so behold Evelyn (the modified phaser) in homage to one of my all-time fave musicians, Mr F V Zappa.

As before, every home should have (at least) one of Barry’s Buff ‘n’ Blend boards. Thanks for reading, folks.
