InactiveI am building my first pedal (a Muffn!) and while waiting for the components I am thinking about what mods to add to it.
I would like to have the Green Russian stock sound and then add the mods that have a significant impact for both Bass and Guitar.
For now I am set on:
- Mod3: Mids knob
- Mod6: Leds/Off/Stock switch for the diodes
And I have doubts about the following, I would like to add 2 extra switches (3 total), but 4 total would also fit:
- Mod5: Tone control bypass. I like the idea, but I have been playing with the Tone Stack Calculator for the Mids knob and it seems to achieve a flat response… so is the bypass adding much in this case? I guess it could give some extra volume, but that’s not something I feel I need.
- Mod4: Muff bender. This sounds like a good one and it sounds like the one that adds more options, is that the case?
- Mod1: LPF. I tend to prefer the tone knob on the bassy side for both bass and guitar… so another way to roll off the highs sounds like a good option, but I couldn’t find audio examples of the effect. Can someone describe a bit the effect and how it differs from the tone knob effects?
- Mod1: HPF. I could add both LPF and HPF for the symmetry, but I don’t think this is something I need.
I think that Mids knob, Diode switch, Bender and LPF is a good pack… but I would appreciate some advice from the experts here!

BarryKeymasterHi and welcome,
Mods 3 and 6: Absolutely.
Mod 5: I can agree with you on that.
Mod 4: You want this for new, less saturated tones. Yes.
Mod 1: It sounds to me from what you have wrote you may want to consider bypassing the tone section altogether and “Inject” a Tone TwEQ since it will offer more options with widely varying degrees and will work excellent on both Bass and 6-string guitars. I think it will also allow you to achieve the tonalities you require a lot quicker as well.
Then maybe even add a Buff N Blend because why not?

InactiveThanks for your answer Barry, and of course for making all these circuits available! Mods 3, 6 and 4 are definitely in now!
About Mod1:
I like the idea of the Tone+Mid knobs and they look to cover most of the spectrum with a simpler setup… but will think about going all in with the tone control!
In any case, aren’t these (stock tone stack or the TwEQ) operating at the tone stage while the LPF/HPF mods happen at the first stage? Isn’t the way it affects the distortion different when it happens before all the clipping? I haven’t really experimented with these things and will be playing around with the circuit once I got it, but I thought the LPF/HPF at the beginning of the circuit would add something different.
About the Buff N Blend:
I am building a second pedal to switch one or more pedals between bass and guitar (each with its own amp) and I have ordered a Buff N Blend to put it there, so that’s covered! At least for now… I don’t discard moving the blender to the Muff in the future.

CybercowParticipantThose are great mods. Personally, I opted for ALL of the mods on my first Muff’N build. The flexible versatility is amazing.
