Adding a DI to GBD2

Hello, total newbie here,

Having never built any of my own pedals yet I’m probably biting off way more than I can chew, but here it goes.

My Idea is to build an “ultimate Bass preamp” (or at least in my mind) by combining a preamp like the GBD2 Driver with a compressor such as a Squishy octopus and mounting them into a rack mountable enclosure stacked onto a standard power amp. What I would need to add that I can’t seem to find info for is an XLR DI output to feed the house system. I would want this output to have the same tone as the output to the power amp but the Power Amp output would obviously need to have an independent Volume control.

Can any of you experts help me come up with a schematic for such a beast? and would it need connect to the output of the GBD2, or would it need to tap somewhere else off the board? If it’s at the output, would I then need a boost circuit to drive the Power amp?

The missing ingredient you desire seems to be a DI box.  You can purchase a basic DI box for around $50.  You can then build the GBD2 and the squishy octopus and string all 3 together.  You can purchase an empty rack mount enclosure and mount them in that if you wish to rest it on top of your amp.

If you wish to build your own Di box, you can do that using vero board if you are so inclined.  I have made several custom projects that contained DI functions and an XLR output. However, I believe that by the time you source all of the components and fabricate the vero board. mount it in an enclosure, etc.  you will have invested more than the price of a commercial DI box.

Thanks for the reply. Am I right that I would just run the DI box from the output of the GBD2? If so, I would still need something that allows adjustment of the signal going to the power amp independently of the XLR out to the House system.

The output of the GBD2 (or whatever is the last pedal in your chain) would attach directly to the input of the DI box.The volume pot on the last pedal in your chain will set the level that goes to the power amp.  The power amp probably also has an input level pot, I would think.  The same level goes to the XLR output in most DI boxes.  That is normally not a concern because the mixer at the studio or HOUSE DESK has an input pad that adjusts the level coming from the DI box.  So, I would not think that you need to worry about that.
