Got this build almost done and realized I don’t have any 500k pots in stock.  I ordered a few B500s from tayda, but the thought of sitting around looking at an incomplete build over 1 stinkin’ pot seems horrible.  I have a B1M.  Could I just solder a 1M resistor across lugs 1 and 3 and call it a day?

In theory, you can, but I don’t think that the result will be as accurate as just waiting for the correct part. If you want to see for yourself, I recommend that you solder a 1M resistor to lugs 1 and 3 and a jumper between lugs 2 and 3 (as seen in the T-Drive circuit) then measure resistance between lugs 1 and 2 as you turn. Please report back. Please try to measure at 25% rotation, 50% rotation, 75% rotation. Before you start, measure your 1M pot and see what the actual resistance is between 1 and 3. Please report that as well. The tolerance of the Alpha pots most people use are only accurate to 20%, but are often much closer than that to the actual value displayed.

Jon – yes, that will work. However it will change the “taper” of that control. For more detailed information see this “Secret Life Of Pots” article
