Red Special – No Protection Diode?

In building my “Red Ranger Special” (a ‘Red Special’ and ‘Tone TwEQ’ combo), I notice that the Red Special has no protection diode. The +9v goes first to the 5K “Sag” control and then the 9v is distributed to the rest of the circuit. I’m considering using 10K ‘Sag’ control value and adding a 1N5817 BEFORE the +9v input to the PCB. With such a low Fvd, the 1N5817 ought not to hinder the supply or affect of the ‘Sag’ control. Am I correct in this conclusion?

I would not expect any adverse effect from that.  But sometimes we get surprises.
