Hey everyone!  I previously posted a different Plexi build in combo with the Stage3, but I came across the photos of my first 2 builds so I thought I’d post them.  I love this circuit for many reasons, but being able to dial in the perfect bias for the sound you want makes this circuit so versatile and useful to so many as just a great amp-like tone.  The active EQ provided by the tone TwEQ gives you all the control you need over the sound, and allowing you to mix the two Plexi channels without being locked into the eq response.

Planning is key for any combo build, but especially when needing access for biasing.  I plan everything out in photoshop, using both the to-scale drill patterns provided for board-mount pcbs, as well as use a photoshop file of to-scale components to map it all out and ensure that everything will fit.  I then print the graphic (sans components) to a clear sticker, trim to size and mount the sticker to the painted (sometimes) enclosure.  The graphic has the center mark for each hole I need to drill so I simply punch each center with an automatic punch, drill pilot holes and then use a step-bit to get to the size I need.  This method, I have found, eliminates the frustration of lining up a graphic with pre-drilled holes, as well as makes drilling the holes and trimming the label a single step.

And now, for the glamour shots – the PlexiPre Classic Overdrive & PlexiPre Deluxe

    Happy Building!

Thanks guys!  They do indeed sound killer and probably the ones I stomp on the most.  Love them with Bass as well!

these are really great-looking combos.  i think you may be the next victim of my copy-cat skills.  may i ask where you chose to come out of the plexi, bypassing the volume there?

@sofnwhat Thank you!  I appreciate the compliment greatly!  I come out of the Plexi where lug 3 of the volume pot would go to intercept the incoming signal.  That goes to the input of the Tone TwEQ and you’re off.

Placement of the board can be tricky, and bending over electrolytic caps is generally necessary.  Would be much easier in a 125BB, but you can get it to work in a 1590BB as you can see.

Looks to me it would fit mounted to the Top Wall or if not either of the side walls maybe?

I bet if the lower row of knobs was compressed into a standard 4-3 configuration you would have enough room to stash it on the sidewall.  Cool thought @barry
