Hello smart people! First time caller here hoping to learn something. I have an old digital rp400 that has this static like crunchy distortion even in bypass mode. I started poking around it with the oscilloscope and see the noise clearly. I was hoping I would find a place where it was not and would then know where it originates. Still haven’t found it but I did find this. Does it mean anything to anybody? The yellow, channel 1, is on the output and the the blue is on a random pin on the board where I am getting a digital signal. The noise looks constant but definetly peaks at the at the falling edges of the square signal. Any help understanding what I’m looking at is much appreciated. Thank you!

The smart people all may be busy so, I thought I would throw some thoughts at you.

Without knowing what the vertical scale setting was on your O’scope, the majority of that noise may just be power supply or other noise from active components.  If the unit is older than 10-15 years, all electrolytic capacitors may be drying up and getting noisy.  If it has opamps, I would try replacing those.  More modern ones like Burr Browns are much quieter.  Is the noise noticeable like bacon frying?  That would be a good clue.

Thanks for the reply Wilkie. This thing is pretty old so I probably won’t go through that much trouble. But who knows just may get bored and task myself into it one of these days. I will update here if I do anything with it or fix it.  Thanks again man!
