G-02 Animal Tone Mods suggestions?

I just finished building the G-02 Animal (without the Q1 buffer stage) and it sounds fairly “bassy/muffled” to my ears, even with a Telecaster.

Has anyone here tried brightening the circuit using the info in the instructions – “A super detailed analysis of the circuit courtesy of Tonmann:” in which the following is excerpted?…

“The tone stage is nothing spectacular and just provides a means of cutting the high
frequencies (tone pot and C17)…. Reducing the value of C9 will increase the high frequencies coming out of the(transistor) stage…. Reducing C12 and C14 will increase the high frequency content of the signal at the output.”

I wanted to ask, before I start replacing caps ad hoc.

If you’ve already committed the caps to that build and want to try other values, remove those caps an question and install sockets for those specific caps. That way, you can easily swap out values and try different combinations.

The circuit is meant to have the tone control turned up full exactly like your Guitar’s tone control and then roll off high frequencies from there as desired. If you start with the tone control centered it would be the same as turning your guitar tone control to center. If you really want to do a useful mod insert the Tone TwEQ and replace the simple passive filter in the circuit with a 3 Band Active EQ which has boost and cut.

The socket thing is a great “why didn’t I think of that” idea. A lot going on here.

I like the idea of a 3 Band EQ as well, but everything is “packaged” making implementation more difficult.

I’ll post back with any positive results. Also, look forward to doing the Mini Me Chorus build, with the Flangery Mod when it becomes available.
