ParticipantQuestion, as I am no Ivy League Engineer, is there any reason I should be showing continuity across the positive and negative post of my DC jack when I supply power to my circuit?
I am having some issues and have never noticed, nor even checked for it before,
All input is welcome

BillyModeratorNo you shouldn’t have continuity between the ground and power lug on the DC jack that would cause a dead short
If it’s a 3 lug switching type jack you will get continuity between the 2 smaller power lugs until you plug an adaptor in
What issues are you having

ParticipantI suspect the wiring in this part of the house is bad. However, I have bought a universal, switchable wall wart to try. Same issue, no matter what I try, nor pedal or circuit, I show continuity and trying the effect/s is DOA. Very frustrating. The adapter and anything plugged in to the wall shows continuity. When not plugged in, the adapter, cord/s, and Effect circuits do not show continuity. SMDH

BillyModeratorIt’s more likely to be a short in the effects circuit or a dodgy DC jack rather than your house wiring if it was that I’d suspect you’d have problems using other electrical devices
I’d perhaps remove your power wires from the DC jack and see if the lugs still have continuity as I say if it’s the 3 solder lug type then only the 2 smaller lugs should have continuity with nothing plugged into the DC jack as soon as you plug an adaptor in continuity should break between those 2 lugs
If you still get continuity on the disconnected jack it’s obviously faulty If not it’s on the pcb so check under magnification for solder bridges in the power supply part of the circuit
The ground lug on the 3 lug types can also move so make sure that hasn’t happened

ParticipantJust the simple 2 lug power jack. This crazy, no continuity issues when pulled apart and tested individually.. I took a cord from the back of my bass rig, plugged it in 3 different sockets, in 3 different sections of the house, all on different legs and continuity is showing across my hot and cold each time. So, has to be my damned multimeter!
Everything in the house and studio is working properly.
Has to be my KPS Multimeter, just got it in a week ago and everything I do is coming up like dead roses.

PlaysforfunModeratorHow do you test continuity across a hot positive and negative? And why do you want to try to? I think you may be using the word continuity instead of hot or showing power or having voltage? I’m confused but maybe you are on it with the DMM.

ParticipantNo, I set DMM to Continuity,, was checking circuit and accidentally touched + and – and it beeped. So I started trying to figure out why . So I started with the DC socket and worked backwards. Even ran to WalMart and bought a Switchable DC wall wart, thinking my Gator power supply was bad.. Wall wart beeped as well. Worked back through the power strip, it beeps. Went all the way to the plug, all 3 holes, hot, cold and ground all beeped on both receptacles beeped.
IDK, maybe I’m high, or crazy! ????????????
Don’t make no damned since. Had to be a Bad DMM.
Going to Ace to pick up a new one later.

PlaysforfunModeratorMy money is on the only problem with that being “accidentally touched“. If the effect doesn’t work then there is a different issue. You should probably start the whole pictures and voltages process if so.
I would say you are inquisitive. Maybe high. Definitely inquisitive.
I think it beeped because you are freaking it out. Checking continuity on a hot circuit across + n – should not be done and can be dangerous at higher voltages. The meter isn’t telling you anything truthful. You simply put the probe where it shouldn’t be with the meter set to continuity. My mother didn’t teach me not to stick things in the wall sockets either. It’s amazing what you can get done with seven fingers;)

ParticipantLOL. I didn’t get to Ace today, so I am going to get it tomorrow and be double sure. Then I will get Voltages and Such.
Thanks for the input, I love this stuff! Now back to AEW on TNT!!!
