Well, I’m starting to work on this season’s builds and am going to start with a stock MKC to begin with.  After completing the MKC, I will continue on with building a Clean Dirt pedal or Judas Priest drive pedal (sort of like the Sabotage pedal). I purchased a kit from Mammoth not that long before they became defunct.  I started organizing the parts and discovered that the board was in a bag labeled MKC1, but at the time of purchase I downloaded the instructions for MKC3.  After removing the board from the bag, to my relief, it was labeled MKC3 on the board so my first obstacle has been overcome.

The instructions state you can use a 100K Pot for Gain 2 or instead use a trimmer on the board.  Is it really worth it to get a pot for external gain control, or is the Pot just fine for a set and forget control as this is supposed to make only a subtle difference?  What are peoples prevailing opinions on this?

Hey Big. Well that is the life long question isn’t it? To set and forget or fiddle with it. Sometimes you need a simplistic approach, other times you want every mod even if they stick out sideways.  I’m usually the guy seeking loads of mods but not always. In this case I opt for a deep enough box to use the stereo pot. In the case for a shallow box, sticking to a single pot works great using the trimmer for gain 2. Even if you set and forget you can still remember that you can re-set and forget again any time. So all tones can remain an option even if you use the trimmer. Clear as mud right?

    Hi Big,

Just another opinion, The added clean signal does temper or smooth the gain a little and it could be part of the circuits legendary Mojo but I don’t find myself using the gain much past 9:00 unless I’m using single coils. Gain 2 really isn’t adding much in that range.
