I have recently built a Double Sho Nuff, and remembered to socket my transistors. It’s only been an hour, and I Love what I hear so far. But I’m curious about swapping the transistors out.

I have an old Peavey Studio Chorus 70 that I have harvested parts from for a while. It contains a number of transistors. J231, J111, 2n5461

I’ll happily search out the data sheets, but what info should be my biggest concern? Which Voltages should I avoid, or look for?

I was going to just pop them in and see, but thought I’d better ask some friendly strangers who may have any warnings.

Can I assume that they are like Goldilocks’ porridge, where some are too hot, or too cold, or just right?

    Thanks,

    Kristopher

Just pop them in Kristopher it’s not going to damage anything in a 9v circuit may not sound great though FETs have to be biased correctly but you never know

The 2N5461 is a p type so that won’t work

Thank you, thats what I wanted to hear. I’ll report back with my judgement of tonal difference.

And if you don’t hear back from me before the end of the day, I burnt the porridge. haha

So the J111 had a hint of sound, when both the Volume and Crackle were maxed. Pretty much useless.

All 3 of the J231’s produced zero signal; totally useless.

I haven’t tested any of them. But the amp they came from, was dug out of the snow last winter.

I’ll remind myself how to test them. Just so I know they’re useless.
