hello I built a tube screaming Preamp and it just has to much gain for me to be able to work with in my style of playing. Is there a way to lower the gain… is this only meant to be put in the effects loop?

First question that comes to mind is where do you have the Bass, Mid, and Treble pots set? Above 50% they will boost the signal which would give the impression of too much gain. The clipping LEDs tend to be louder than other diodes so maybe replacing them with 1N914s or 1N4148s would drop it some.

Try reducing the value of the gain pot

    +1 Billy!

SImple way to try this is to solder a resistor (try 470K or 510K) between lugs 1 and 3 of the GAIN pot.  The result will be about a 242K pot instead of a 500K pot.
