On my never ending quest to perfect stacking dirt pedals with the HM-2 EQ I’ve got a GPCB MUFFN (Green Russian) and the Buff ‘n Blend on one followed by the God City Instruments Murdock Jr (mini, pre-fab HM-2 EQ) on the other. I have included the Buff n Blend on almost any build where I can fit it to make as many of my builds as possible more bass friendly.
In this case the pairing is a little odd, to say the least, as the Russian does not play together with the HM-2 EQ as well as the Rat, Op-amp Muff, DS-1, or DOD250 do. That said, when Volume, sustain, blend, and the HM-2 EQ are at 11 but Tone is at 0 it yields a formidable, crushing doom tone. I looked at the build doc and socketed any components that differ between the black and green Russians and will experiment to see if one works better than the other.
Independently however, both circuits are great. I have built a couple GCI Murdocks (the larger, through hole Murdock Plus) for others and am very familiar with that particular chainsaw EQ but the Green Russian is a beast. To my ear and playing style it seems more unruly than other Muffs I’ve used (this is a good thing) and it has a little something that just makes it stand out. Maybe I’ve just listened to Dompesmoker too many times and that sound is wired directly to the dopamine receptors in my brain.
