A while back I managed to corner a significant chunk of the OSH Park market for Jon Patton’s Hamlet Delay through a bonehead ordering error (bought 6 boards instead of 3). Built one and it didn’t work correctly (because the guy holding the soldering iron failed to pay attention to the pot orientations) so they all ended up in the future projects bin/bin of fail. Fast forward a few years and I decided to have another go at it (because the Diablo Chris Sagan Delay V. 1 I’ve been slowly and carefully working away on scares me). Got the fresh board populated, smacked myself in the head for getting the pots wrong on the first one, checked everything with my muti-meter, set the bias per Jon’s instructions, popped it all in a box, and it worked quite nicely. After playing with it long enough for my wife to get tired of it, dropped it out of the box, added labels and matte clear coat, popped everything back in, and it doesn’t work. The effect passes signal when on and off, the volume and tone pots effect the signal when on, but delay, mix and repeats pots do nothing. Figuring the 2399 has been in two other builds and might have given up I pulled a known working 2399 from a working delay (Madbean Dirtbaby Rev. 1), double checked the bias and still no joy. Put the original 2399 in the Dirtbaby and it works fine. Voltage at the diode to the right of the LT1054 is 17.75v and bias is set at 10.5v at the drain of Q2 (2n5457).
Here are images of the populated board in the box and the backside of the board out of the box – anybody see anything wrong?
