Big OParticipantI don’t know if anyone has modified a drill press (adding attachments) for drilling enclosures, so below is what I did.
I got tired of the metal shavings/debris being thrown all over the placing creating a major mess to clean up. So I tried different methods to try and contain the metal drilling debris and finally came up with a containment box. I reinforced a small box (thank you Amazon) and cut rectangular holes or slots in the bottom to match the cutouts in the adjustable metal table/tray on the drill press. I created a clamp – two hex bolts, washers, wing nuts and wood clamping surfaces that fits through the holes/slots in the box and drill press table/tray. I placed another box underneath to catch any errant debris that falls below the slots on the bottom surface.

Below is entire rig with containment box below.

Has anyone come up with a similar method or another idea to contain the metal drilling debris?

GuestI still use a Shop Vac to clean up afterwards before my wife yells at me.

Big OParticipantYes, that was my old method. Now I pretty much vacuum up whats in the boxes and a little bit in the surrounding area. But no far flung debris feet away from the drill press.

GuestWe just celebrated our 50th Anniversary. I’m a little afraid to change much at this point.
But your idea looks great!

ChuckParticipantGood job both of you. I have a rather large auxiliary table on my drill press that catches most of the debris. After each session I clean it up with a shop brush. Of course it helps that it is out in the garage.

Big OParticipantMy drill press is set up on top of a floor standing table saw in my garage next to my work bench. After moving to FL I lost my basement workshop space which I dearly miss. Unfortunately there a lot of nooks and crannies for errant drill debris/metal shavings to get into so I keep my shop vac at the ready next to my table top drill press.
Wilkie has me beat. We will be celebrating only just our 37th wedding anniversary.

GuestGreetings from Cajah’s Mountain…????????????
Big O, didn’t you usta be a giant, Japanese robot?????Just askin’…
Anyway…
That looks like an actual solution to my quandary. I had been doing my drilling in my guest bedroom/studio/workshop with my cordless drill, perched over a small trash can, which caught most of the shavings, both metal and plastic, but, not all of them. I vacuumed afterwards but we know how those curly shavings burrow into carpet like a mole in a worm farm, so “th’ Missus” has declared that she won’t set foot in there until the minefield has been cleared. And, as I’m sure you and wilkie1 both know, even though she very seldom ventures into my “shop”, little things like this can be blown out of proportion astonishingly fast.
So, indoor drilling permits will probably be pulled and I will be banished to my larger shop out back, where my drill press lives and heat does not…
and it’s still pretty cold around these parts, ???? so I will get a chance to try out your design…
Pray for me…????????

GuestI pray for all of Barry’s pedal builders. I raise my Coor’s Light can to all of you!

GuestI appreciate the mention to the Boss upstairs, wilkie1.
But, since I haven’t been at this DYI pedal racket long enough for it to drive me back to drink, (although, to paraphrase Khan from Star Trek 2: “This DSOTMV4 build… It tasks me”), I’ll see your non-fat Coors and raise you a Full Throttle…
Cheers!…
