    A couple of years ago I posted pictures of my versatile silicon transistor Hornby Skewes type treble booster built with a GBOF board, the Ultra Purple Boost.  Shortly after posting the pictures and playing with the pedal for a little bit I starting having grounding problems and the booster going in and out on me.  I opened it up and started probing around without being able to find the culprit for the problems.  During the probing around, I dislodged a wire from the main board.  The wires around the main board were a mess and totally disorganized, but the location of the board in front of the footswitch made it difficult to work with.  I knew I had to resolder some wires to the board and place the GBOF board in a better location.

    After building the Clean Dirt pedal, I finally got the impetus to redo the Ultra Purple Boost, and I mean a near total redo.  I ended up resoldering all wires to the main board, except for the wires to the output part, mainly because during manipulation of the GBOF board some wires broke loose.  That is why I now only use quality wire to build pedals now and Barry’s hook-up wire is the bomb!  In order to move the main board to the back of the enclosure, I had to splice multiple wires to lengthen them including the wires to the pot.  Some wires also broke off the 3PDT board as well, requiring replacement of 4 of them.

    Reworking the pedal really gave me fits at times, partly do to making stupid beginner’s mistakes.  First, there was no true bypass when hitting the footswitch and it clued me in that I may have soldered the output wires to the jack backwards.  After inspection, that is exactly what I did!  How I did that, I have no idea but I was tired at the time.  Once I corrected jack wiring and the could be bypassed around the GBOF board, I hit the switch again and … Nothing!  I then started inspecting the GBOF  closely with a magnifying glass, counting solder pads and discovered another rookie mistake – I soldered a wire into the wrong pad.  Being off one solder pad makes a big difference with this board.  I obviously counted wrong when resoldering all the wires to the board.

    Revamped pedal interior.  Note that the GBOF board is now attached to the back interior wall of the enclosure and that the multiple capacitor board attached to the rotary switch is attached to the inside cover of the pedal to the left of the 3PDT switch.  You can see the output cap selector switch and capacitor board in the upper left hand of the enclosure when it was covered previously by wires and the other capacitor board.  The battery now can be placed into the back right side of the enclosure alongside the right side of the 3PDT switch.
