InactiveQuestion one:
I’m the worship leader at church. I play direct in to mixer, so I’ve been using a Joyo American Sound as a kind of pre-amp/modeller. Being that I play at church, “dirt” isn’t really a common thing, so I keep the gain pretty low. I keep the pedal on at all times, just to make the guitar sound at least decent. What amp emulation preamp pedal by GuitarPCB would be a good clean tone amp emulator substitute that I can switch out for the Joyo? I know that they have GOT to be better than the Joyo.Second question is a general pedal order question, related to question one. On my board, I have a looper station (think Ed Sheeran) but I also have a looper switcher. I have all of my effects going through the switcher. Currently, I’m running the Joyo and the looper station out from the switcher, into the direct box. the 3 options I have for post switcher pedal order would be….
switcher->looper->Joyo->DI
switcher->Joyo->looper->DI
Joyo on it’s own switch channel, the switcher->looper->DIWhich makes more sense? I know that loopers are traditionally put completely last, so that all tone/effect is included in the loop….but pre-amp/emulations are also supposed to be last. Being that the Joyo is always on, I just assumed that I would use it like an amp, which is always “last” in the chain.
final thought….asking my second question gets confusing, because the 2 pedals I discuss are both called “loopers.” Why was there no forethought when naming these things?
Have a good one!

BarryKeymasterHi Todd, I will handle the first question before power washing the entire farm house.
Others feel free to answer questions or offer alternative opinions.
“I’m the worship leader at church. I play direct in to mixer, so I’ve been using a Joyo American Sound as a kind of pre-amp/modeller. Being that I play at church, “dirt” isn’t really a common thing, so I keep the gain pretty low”.
Sounds to me like what you really need is a way to get your clean tones on and the best way to do that is with a real amplifier. There are many new “small” amplifiers out there, even pedal size ones that will give you great clean tones which can then be fed to the mixer. The other thing you need is a cabinet emulator. Many of these new small amplifiers have switches on them to emulate real speaker tones.
To me getting the pure tone you need that actually sounds like a real amp with a speaker cabinet is the most important part.
The Joyo American sound is a preamp however the pedal is assuming you are playing through a guitar amplifier or running through some type of “power amp” with a speaker emulator. The Joyo pedal itself does not do either of those. That is why it does not sound great.
Here is a list I grabbed at random which contains small portable amps that have emulated speaker outputs for a mixer except the Vox and I believe are all under $200. https://www.guitarhabits.com/top-6-best-guitar-amps-practice-small-gigs/
There are many more options than just those linked above so Google things like “worship amps”, “small amps” etc.
Here are some options that are in Pedal format so no speaker however they have speaker emulation which is key. These are relatively newer products and the prices vary widely from cheap to very expensive:

That is my advice to establish how you are going to achieve your base tone first because that is the tone that is going to carry the rest of your sound. Then once you have your clean tone established (with mic’d speakers or emulation) you can add all sorts of tones on top of that including gain tones and a world more.
Here is an interesting read as well: https://reverb.com/news/the-gear-tones-and-techniques-of-modern-worship-guitar
I guess I could have stumped for the Tone TwEQ or Tube Screaming Preamp but I know how important it is to have an excellent Canvas (your pure amp tone) before adding the paints.
I hope that helps!

Inactiveseems like the Strymon has become a staple in the worship leading world. Nearly everybody has them. My problem is, I don’t even spend $400 on my guitars, I certainly wouldn’t be able to justify purchasing a box for that much (justify to my wife….I’ll know it’s worth it)

BarryKeymasterHere is a speaker emulator for $69 on eBay:

That would certainly go a long way to make things better than they are currently. Run it Mono right after the JoYo.
Then build all the GuitarPCB pedals you want and throw them in the mix.

GuestNot an endorsement, but here is a seemingly ‘packed’ less expensive alternative to the Strymon. This particular link is on Reverb.

Big OParticipantIf you want to go cheap, the Blackstar Debut amps have a speaker-emulated output and a tape-based delay effect for $80-100. I bought one of these for my wife who was using my 1976 Marlboro 10W practice amp, but it was starting to have some issues (fading in and out on low volume settings). It is more than an adequate replacement due to the delay, speaker emulated output (which can be used with headphones or out to a PA system), and MP3 input if you want to play along with backing tracks.

InactiveI actually ended up buying the Nux Solid Studio. Got it on reverb…probably the first time one of my starting offers were accepted. Picked it up for $130. It should be here tomorrow. This will replace the Joyo, which will now be relegated to the “at home only” board.

InactiveAs far as building GuitarPCB projects, I think I’ve done 4 now…Julius I can’t seem to get to work, I have spare parts coming in this week to try swapping things out. I’ve successfully complete the Ancestral Apparition, The D-Lay, and Dr Phybes. right smack dab in the center of my board as my “ambience” effects. I’m becoming more adept at creating my own pads, when the sound people are falling asleep at the mixer.

InactiveUnfortunately, I’ve run out of loops available on my switcher….of course, I guess I don’t use distortion all that much….so it could be sacrificed, I guess…..Right now, my Switched pedals are a compressor that hasn’t arrived yet, A Crown Jewell, Some Caline overdrive thing. Pigtronics Disnortion micro, Spark mini boost, And the ambient group of 3. So, of the 8, 4 of them I built…yeah me!….funny to think, I couldn’t even solder a year ago. off switch is the tuner, volume pedal, and a looper station….and the Nux will be added after the looper.
I’m considering replacing the T-Drive OD….I liked my cheap Moskey clone of the Timmy, so I’m thinking I may enjoy the T-Drive even more. Also considering the Mini Me….you know, since I don’t have a chorus effect, yet….lol
These things are becoming like Pokemon for me….gotta catch ’em all.

BarryKeymasterYah hard to imagine worship tones without a Mini-Me.

InactiveFor question one, if you want to stick to an analog route (and not use a digital modeler) maybe the OmniCabSim is what you’re looking for?
https://www.dsmnoisemaker.com/omnicabsim-deluxe
Here’s a decent demo I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlmd6SabuF0
The way I think of it is like a tone control on steroids. It comes with a DI so you can send it direct to a console or PA. If you’re looking to build something like this you can find a schematic (and someone sells a pcb version). I built one stacked with a JCM800 emulator and use it for direct recording.
Another similar product is the Tech21 SansAmp similar but approaches the problem from a different direction. Also includes a DI XLR out.
As far as your second question is concerned. I think it depends, but for the most flexibility I would put the switcher (and all the pedals it controls) before the joyo (perhaps the joyo is in it’s own “switched loop” after your other pedals and then the loop station at the very end. This way, you can choose to not use the joyo while making your loops (maybe it doesn’t do well with percussive or you don’t like the sound of it with another pedal) and then switch the joyo back on for your live guitar sound.
EDIT: Just noticed you went with the NuX. I haven’t heard of that one. In any case I’d still order it the same way.
